Some Type 1 car insurance policies give you the option to choose a flexible plan that allows any driver to use your car. Our friendly insurance experts will let you know if your policy has a flexible driver plan.
Here are the standard driver plans you may have the option to choose.
You are covered for any driver using your car so long as they have your consent. This includes young drivers or inexperienced drivers. This plan gives you more flexibility hence it is most expensive compared to other driver plans.
Name all the drivers of your car on your policy. Your policy will only cover these drivers when they drive your car. This is more restrictive but will help reduce your premium.
Motorists above 25 years-old
Specify the age range of those who will be driving your car. If all drivers of your car are more than 25 years of age then this can help reduce your premium.
Choose the amount of deductible you pay with your Type 1 car insurance
You can make a saving on your car insurance by choosing the amount of deductible you want to pay. Some insurers give you the option.
A deductible is the amount you must pay out of your own pocket before your insurer will pay any expenses towards a claim. It is a voluntary agreement between you and the insurance company. Increasing your deductible can be a good way to help reduce the cost of your premium.
If you are not sure what amount of deductible is right for you don’t worry, our fully-qualified insurance experts will advise you depending on your driving style, lifestyle and budget.Repair workshops
Some insurers give you a choice when it comes to which garage or workshop you wish to use for all your car repairs. Our friendly insurance experts will advise you.
Our first-class insurers have their own quality Network Garages where your car will be sent for repairs. You won’t pay any additional premium for this as it is included as part of your standard insurance policy.
Alternatively, some insurers give you the added flexibility of being able to choose your Own Dealer Garage.

Frequently Asked Questions about type 1 car insurance
What can you claim with type 1 car insurance?
You can make a claim in case of the event of a collision with another person that causes injury or death, including accidents and damage to other people's property such as a collision with the home fencing of another person’s home. The type 1 insurance will be responsible for all damages, as specified in the car insurance policy.
What’s the difference between Type 1 and Type 2+ car insurance?
Type 2+ car insurance is cheaper than Type 1 car insurance. Type 2+ has a lower coverage limit on the amount you can claim following damage to your own car. The other significant difference is the fact that, with Type 2+ car insurance, you cannot claim for damage to your vehicle if it doesn’t involve another motorist. For example, if you crashed into a wall you would have to pay for any damage to your car out of your own pocket. Type 2+ car insurance also doesn’t cover 24-Hour Emergency Roadside Assistance, unlike most Type 1 car insurance policies.
What is the difference between having your car repaired at a Network Garage or your Own Dealer Garage?
Having your car repaired at a Network Garage
All our insurers have their own Network Garages where your car will be sent to for repairs. Our insurance companies are all leading brands in Thailand so you can rest assured that you’ll receive great service every time.
You do not pay any additional premium to have your car repaired at a Network Garage. This is already included as part of your standard insurance policy.
Alternatively, some insurers give you the added flexibility of being able to choose your Own Dealer Garage.
Having your car repaired at your Own Dealer Garage
For a few extra baht you can choose to have your car repaired at your Own Dealer Garage. This is a good way to ensure your repair work is carried out by mechanics who are familiar with your particular car make and model.
What medical expenses does car insurance cover?
Following a car accident, car insurance policies are able to pay for a number of medical expenses. Common expenses covered are: ambulance fees; hospital visits and stays; doctor visits; surgery and X-rays; professional nursing services and care; prosthetic limbs; dental procedures required as a result of the accident; and injuries sustained as a pedestrian or cyclist when hit by a vehicle.
What is a Bail bond?
A bail bond is a bail contract for the accused that covers the driver’s legal expenses or costs against any criminal charges that might arise following a car accident. It gives peace of mind to the driver should the worst happen, and he/she is faced with a criminal prosecution which would entail costly legal bills. The bail bond would cover such legal costs.
What is a No Claim Bonus?
A No Claim Bonus (NCB) or No Claim Discount (NCD) is a discount on your insurance premium. It enables an insurer to assess how safe you are as a driver. The discount is based on the years you’ve been driving and your claims record. As you accumulate more years of driving without making a claim, the more discount you will receive on the full-priced premium. For each year without an at-fault claim, your NCB should rise to a maximum of 50% after five years. The amount varies depending on the insurer but you could easily rake in a savings of several hundred dollars a year on your premium.
What impacts the price of my policy?
Several factors determine the cost of the premium on your insurance policy. One is the number of claims you have made in the past three years. Your No Claims Discount and driving experience are also looked at to determine how safe a driver you are. Your age, gender, the type of car you drive as well as your occupation are factored in. Another consideration is whether you regularly use your car for work or are an off-peak driver. If the former, you may be required to pay more for car insurance while the latter may get a discount on their policy.
Do new drivers pay more for car insurance?
Yes, they do. Drivers pay for insurance so that in case they meet with an accident, they can claim against their policy. The more incidences of insured drivers who meet with an accident, the higher the premiums of those insured. Insurance companies can either increase all premiums or raise premiums for drivers who are most at risk. They tend to choose the fairer option by targeting the latter. Unfortunately, new, inexperienced drivers generally fall into this category as they are more likely to make an insurance claim than other drivers - and their claim costs - too, may be a few times higher.
How do car insurance claims get rejected?
There are standard reasons for the rejection of car insurance claims. Insurers do not cover drivers who are without a driver’s licence or accidents that occur due to a driver’s negligence. If you’re deemed responsible for the accident, for instance through drink driving, your claim will be rejected. Some insurance companies may reject the claim if the person at the wheel is an unauthorised driver or if the car is used in an unsafe manner. This includes carrying more passengers than the vehicle should carry, using a personal car to transport goods, and installing NGV or LPG gas systems without giving notification. You will also not be covered if you were to leave the scene after causing an accident.
Does the car brand or model impact my car insurance quote?
Yes, the brand and model of your vehicle does influence the cost of your car insurance. This is because the type of car you drive influences your style of driving. So, a luxury sports car will typically cost more to insure than a minivan. This is because sports cars are typically driven at higher speeds, making drivers more susceptible to accidents. If the model of vehicle you are driving has been in more accidents or filed more claims, your rates could be higher. The cost of repairs of the model of your car model would also be taken into account.
Is it better to pay car insurance annually or monthly?
Paying your insurance premiums annually is usually the least expensive option. Many insurance companies will give those insured a discount for paying in full. This is because it costs more for the insurance company if a policyholder pays their premiums monthly as they are then required to carry out manual processing monthly to keep the policy active. However, if you are unable to afford a lumpsum payment, most insurance companies will be willing to allow you to pay the premium on a monthly payment plan.
What is car insurance?
Car insurance - also known as motorcar insurance, vehicle insurance or auto insurance - protects vehicle owners against medical and liability costs arising from traffic incidents. Besides car accidents, car insurance may also offer financial protection against vehicle theft and damage due to events like natural disasters and collisions with stationary objects. Common types of car insurance include: Type 1Car Insurance, which provides the highest level of cover; and Type 3 Car Insurance , that provides the most basic level of cover and is usually the cheapest.
